-craft taken to Ruimveldt coast guard base for search
The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guard and the Guyana Police Force (GPF) last night intercepted a `go-fast’ boat with Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed aboard and at 2. 20 am today it was taken to Ruimveldt for further investigations.
It was being claimed by the GDF and GPF that an item had been thrown from the vessel.
A statement issued this morning by the GPF said that further investigations into the interception of a ‘go-fast’ vessel at Friendship, East Bank Demerara, have revealed that at approximately 21:50 hrs on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, Joint Services ranks, while on patrol and acting on information received, observed the vessel proceeding along the Demerara River towards the Friendship area.
“The ranks signalled the vessel by siren to stop. However, the vessel failed to comply and sped away, prompting a pursuit before it was subsequently intercepted at a wharf at Friendship.
“During the pursuit, ranks reported observing a bag being thrown from the vessel into the Demerara River. At this stage, it has not been determined who threw the bag or what it contained.
“Efforts are ongoing to locate and recover the bag and determine its contents as part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Further information will be provided as it becomes available”.
Since the interception occurred Mohamed’s Team Mohamed’s page has been live on the boat and a running commentary has been provided by We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) MP Odessa Primus. She at various times said that the situation was akin to kidnapping. She said that several of the persons who purported to be officers had refused to identify themselves and were not telling them where they were being taken.
Mohamed’s voice could also be heard in the background. As a power ship was being passed he said that that was what was guzzling the country’s money.
Among the MPs on board the vessel are Dawn Hastings-Williams and Tabitha Sarabo-Halley.
Both Mohamed and Primus raised questions about how the boat would be searched. Primus ridiculed the claim of something being thrown from the vessel.
Primus also complained about being tired and feeling unwell.
The WIN team had been returning from a visit to the northwest to speak to the families of victims of the MV Barima tragedy.
