Canje grass fire threatened commuters, NCN infrastructure – GFS

Firefighters yesterday

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) responded to a grass fire on Friday, November 6, 2026, in the vicinity of the Canje Bridge, New Amsterdam, Berbice, which it said posed a serious threat to critical National Communications Network (NCN) infrastructure and commuters on the bridge.

The GFS said that initial reports indicated that the incident began as a rubbish fire. However, upon the arrival of firefighters, the flames had spread rapidly through the surrounding vegetation, developing into a significant blaze and generating thick clouds of smoke across the area.

A GFS release said that firefighters immediately began firefighting operations and successfully brought the blaze under control, preventing further escalation and protecting the threatened infrastructure.

However, due to the extensive vegetation in the area, firefighting operations continued into yesterday as firefighters worked to contain the remaining flames and prevent further spread.

The Guyana Fire Service once again issued a strong warning to members of the public to desist from the indiscriminate burning of rubbish and dry vegetation.
