Committee to manage truck parks; fees to be announced shortly

A management committee will be established to oversee designated truck parking facilities, with fees and operational arrangements to be announced in the coming days, Minister of Housing Collin Croal said yesterday.

During a visit to the 24-acre facility under development at Hermitage, Wales, West Bank Demerara, Croal said the management arrangements would provide for security, maintenance and daily operations.

According to a Ministry of Housing release, the facilities will accommodate truck parking, servicing and routine maintenance. Fees are intended to support their upkeep, while their operations are also expected to create employment.

Croal said work at Hermitage was approximately 75 per cent complete, with six contractors executing works across six lots. Four lots are expected to be completed within a month and the remaining two before the end of 2026.

He expressed confidence that the facility would become operational before year-end.

Works have reached the placement of crusher run, and lighting is planned to allow use beyond regular working hours.

The minister said the truck parking facility at Grove, East Bank Demerara, would be the first to become operational, with similar management arrangements to be applied at Hermitage.

The developments form part of a government programme to provide designated truck parking and automotive service areas and address concerns about those activities in residential communities.

Hermitage is one of two such facilities being pursued in Region Three, the ministry said.

Stabroek News reported in December 2025 that the Central Housing and Planning Authority was developing the Grove truck stop within an industrial area to accommodate heavy-duty vehicles without disturbing surrounding residential communities.

During a visit to the site, CH&PA Chief Executive Officer Dr Martin Pertab said the facility would provide both parking and support and maintenance services for heavy-duty equipment. He urged contractors to complete the work promptly and said their performance would influence consideration for future contracts.

The report also noted President Irfaan Ali’s announcement of plans for two 30-acre facilities at Palmyra and Number 76 Village in Region Six, intended to accommodate trucks and heavy-duty equipment and improve traffic flow and safety.
