Man flees from police in Sophia, drops gun

The discarded weapon

Police are investigating the discovery of an illegal firearm and ammunition after a man fled from ranks during an anti-crime patrol at Fourth Corner, ‘A’ Field, Sophia, late Tuesday night.

According to a police statement, the incident occurred at about 11.50 pm when ranks conducting the patrol observed a man, whom they recognised as a resident of ‘A’ Field, Sophia, holding a black handgun.

The statement said that upon seeing the police, the man fled in an eastern direction and discarded the weapon while being pursued. Despite the chase, he managed to escape.

Police subsequently recovered the firearm, which was identified as a .32 pistol with no serial number. A magazine containing two matching live rounds of ammunition was also recovered.

The firearm and ammunition were taken to the Turkeyen Police Station, where they were lodged as investigations continue.

No arrest has been made.
