Fisherman dies after Corriverton confrontation, boy held

Asmat Mohamed Hussain

A 55-year-old fisherman died on Wednesday night following a reported confrontation with a 15-year-old boy outside the One Go Supermarket in Corriverton, Corentyne.

The dead man has been identified as Asmat Mohamed Hussain, also known as “Uncle Khadar”, of Lot 23 Dukestown, Corriverton.

Regional Police Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus confirmed that the incident was being investigated. A 15-year-old secondary school student of Number 77 Housing Scheme has since been arrested.

The incident occurred outside the supermarket, where groups had gathered to consume alcohol and listen to music being played from sound systems installed in vehicles.

Police are reviewing footage from surveillance cameras in the area.

Hussain’s sister, Bibi Hussain, told reporters that her brother had been with relatives outside the supermarket before entering the store to purchase several beers.

She said that shortly afterwards, relatives and other persons rushed towards the front of the supermarket after someone shouted that a man had been stabbed.

Hussain was found lying motionless in a pool of blood. He was taken to the Number 75 Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Bibi said her brother appeared to have sustained injuries to his head. She said she did not know what had led to the confrontation between him and the teenager.

The investigation is continuing.
