Fisherman remanded over fatal Albion stabbing

A 28-year-old fisherman was yesterday remanded to prison after being charged with manslaughter over the stabbing death of another fisherman at Albion Front, Corentyne.

Videsh Singh, of Lot 71 Albion Front, appeared before Magistrate Tuanna Hardy at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court, East Canje.

It is alleged that on September 6, at Albion Front, Singh unlawfully killed 34-year-old Franklyn “Franky” Sauers, of Lot 247 Belvedere Village, Corentyne.

Singh was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

Attorney Vinay Punwa applied for bail and told the court that Singh and Sauers had earlier been involved in an altercation at a bar.

According to the attorney, Singh subsequently left and returned home, but Sauers later went to his premises and attacked him.

Punwa said Singh, fearing for his life and the safety of his family, armed himself with a knife during the confrontation. Sauers sustained injuries which subsequently proved fatal.

As he was being escorted from the courthouse to a police vehicle, Singh told reporters: “The man run till in me house and knock me.”

Police Prosecutor Corporal Meika Crawford objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the charge and the fact that a life had been lost.

Crawford said the investigation remained ongoing and police expected to obtain additional statements from persons in the area. She also expressed concern that Singh could interfere with witnesses or evidence if released.

The prosecutor further told the court that the post-mortem examination report was outstanding and that legal advice was being sought.

Magistrate Hardy refused bail and remanded Singh to prison until September 16, when the matter is expected to be called again.

Police had previously reported that Sauers was found in the living room of a house at Albion Front with stab wounds to his ribs and neck. He was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Singh was arrested at the scene and subsequently charged.
