More than 204,000 transactions have been processed at government service centres operating across six regions since the first facility opened at Leonora last December, according to Minister of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation Zulfikar Ally.
In an interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI), Ally said the centres allow residents to access services offered by several government agencies without travelling to Georgetown.
Among the agencies operating at the centres are the Guyana Revenue Authority, the General Register Office and the Central Immigration and Passport Office. The facilities also handle enrolment and the issuance of cards under the national electronic identification programme.
“It saves them time and money,” Ally said, adding that the centres provide greater “reliability and predictability” for persons seeking government services.
The programme began at Leonora, Region Three, and was expanded with the opening of centres at Fort Wellington, Region Five, in February; Anna Regina, Region Two, in April; Port Mourant, Region Six, in May; and Lethem, Region Nine, in July.
A sixth centre was opened at Bartica, Region Seven, last week.
Ally said the ministry is working to establish additional centres in areas not yet covered, including Region One and Linden, Region Ten.
