A house at Lot 17 Goed Intent, West Bank Demerara, was destroyed by fire and an occupant sustained burns following a reported gas cylinder explosion, the Guyana Fire Service said.
According to the Fire Service, preliminary reports indicated that the occupant was cooking when the cylinder reportedly exploded, burning him on his left shoulder and back.
Emergency Medical Technicians treated him at the scene before transporting him to hospital for further treatment.
Firefighters from the Leonora Fire Station, led by Section Leader Corbin, arrived to find the building engulfed in flames. A water tender, a water carrier and an ambulance were dispatched.
The Fire Service said crews contained the blaze to the building, preventing it from spreading to neighbouring properties. However, the house and its contents were completely destroyed.
Investigations are continuing to determine the circumstances and cause of the fire.
