The ICT Hub at the Orealla Primary School in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) was recently connected to the community’s 45.9 kilowatt-peak (kWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) mini-grid.

A release from the Office of the Prime Minister said that the electrical connection works were carried out by Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) Network Maintenance Technician Dianand Dhrigpaul, with the aid of Caribbean Efficient and Green-Energy Buildings (CEGEB) Project apprentice, Sasha Benjamin.

The facility is currently being renovated, and access to renewable energy will provide a reliable source of electricity to support its operations. Once fully operational, the release said that the ICT Hub will be able to use this renewable energy to power its lighting, computers, fans, and other equipment, while also providing charging for electronic devices.

The upgraded facility will also expand opportunities for primary and secondary school students, as well as teachers, to access a range of ICT services that support teaching, learning, and other educational activities.

This initiative is part of Government’s ongoing efforts, through the GEA under the Office of the Prime Minister, to expand access to clean and renewable energy in communities across the country, particularly in Hinterland and remote areas.
