Kitty businessman remanded over attempted Tuschen robbery

Naipaul Basdeoram

A Kitty businessman was on Friday remanded to prison after being charged in connection with an attempted armed robbery at the home of a Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) official at Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo.

Naipaul Basdeoram, 36, of David Street, appeared before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

He was charged with attempting to commit the felony of robbery under arms. He was not required to plead to the indictable charge and was remanded until October 9.

Police said Basdeoram was arrested on August 29, one day after the attempted robbery.

The police had previously reported that the incident occurred at approximately 6.48 am on August 28 at the Tuschen New Housing Scheme.

According to police, the intended victim, a 42-year-old CH&PA Director of Projects, had stepped outside his home to dispose of garbage. After returning and securing the door, he checked his security cameras and saw four masked men entering his yard.

The men were reportedly approaching a western door when the official contacted the police.

Acting on information, ranks intercepted three men at Fisher Dam, Zeelugt. They were identified as two labourers, aged 22 and 23, of Tucville, Georgetown, and a 22-year-old security guard of Cane View Squatting Area, Georgetown.

Police said searches uncovered two suspected firearms, each with three matching rounds of ammunition. One firearm was reportedly found in a haversack carried by one of the suspects, while the other was allegedly concealed on the 23-year-old.

The weapons and ammunition were marked, sealed and lodged at the Leonora Police Station.

Investigators subsequently returned to the scene and obtained footage from surveillance cameras in the area for examination by crime-scene technicians.

The police have not said whether charges have been instituted against the three men initially arrested.
