New Number 63 Beach park includes football pitch, volleyball courts

The new play park

A new recreational park at Number 63 Beach includes a football pitch and volleyball courts, with Public Works Minister Juan Edghill urging that the facility be developed into a major tourist attraction.

According to a Ministry of Public Works release, the park is the fifth and largest facility of its kind completed in Region Six. All construction was undertaken by Berbice contractors under the supervision of the ministry’s Sea and River Defence Department.

The release did not state the park’s construction cost.

Edghill said the development should serve residents and visitors, with its sporting facilities providing opportunities to host competitions and tournaments. The ministry said increased visitor activity could benefit vendors, food businesses and transport operators.

The minister called for efforts to develop the park’s tourism potential, describing Number 63 Beach as a destination that visitors to Guyana should experience.

“What you are experiencing here is not just because we have money… it is because of vision and priorities,” Edghill said, crediting President Irfaan Ali and First Lady Arya Ali.

The ministry said the recreational development accompanied sea-defence investments across Berbice. According to the release, more than seven kilometres of sea-defence works, valued at $5.5 billion, have been completed since 2020.

Edghill also urged residents to support clean-up campaigns and help prevent dumping along seawalls, roadsides and other public spaces.

He said Neighbourhood Democratic Councils in Region Six and elsewhere had been provided with equipment to address garbage disposal, but public cooperation was also necessary.

“It’s a culture change that is required and a culture change that must come from each of us,” he said.

The development had been publicly outlined before its completion. Stabroek News reported in September 2025 that Tourism Minister Susan Rodrigues inspected ongoing works at Number 63 Beach and announced plans to develop it into a major tourism destination. The upgrade formed part of the National Beautification Project, undertaken by the Office of the First Lady in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and the Region Six administration.
