Fire Service donates 15 hampers to elderly care homes, trains staff in fire safety

The Guyana Fire Service distributed 15 hampers during visits to the Palms Geriatric Home and Uncle Eddie’s Home in Georgetown, where staff were also taught how to use fire extinguishers and evacuate residents in an emergency. The visits formed part of the Service’s month-long observance of Fire Prevention Month, according to a release. Head of the Fire Prevention Department, Sheldon Sauns, led the team from the department’s headquarters. Staff at both institutions were briefed on the different classes of fires, the appropriate extinguishers to use and evacuation procedures. The Fire Service said the visits have become an annual feature of its Fire Prevention Month activities, combining support for the homes with safety education for those caring for elderly residents.
