Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, yesterday met the World Bank’s new Division Director for the Caribbean, Achim Fock, and incoming Country Representative for Guyana and Suriname, Juan Carlos Alvarez.
The meeting was held at the Ministry of Finance as Fock commenced his tenure, a ministry release said.
Fock and Alvarez were accompanied by outgoing World Bank Country Representative for Guyana and Suriname, Diletta Doretti, and other bank officials. Singh was joined by a team from the ministry.
According to the release, the discussions focused on the continuing partnership between the government and the World Bank. Singh also expressed appreciation for the bank’s support for projects in several sectors.
Among the initiatives identified were the Guyana One Health Project, Caribbean Efficient and Green Buildings Programme, Human Capital Development Project and Integrated Transport Corridor Project.
Fock, a German national with qualifications in agriculture and agricultural economics, has more than 25 years of experience at the World Bank. He previously managed the Development Effectiveness Unit for South Asia and served as a senior economist working on countries in Africa, East Asia and Eastern Europe.
Alvarez succeeds Doretti, who has completed her assignment in Guyana.
The World Bank has provided financing and technical support to Guyana for several decades, including during the country’s economic recovery programme of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
