Minister of Education Sonia Parag on Tuesday led a team of government officials on an inspection of the University of Guyana’s Turkeyen Campus to assess its infrastructural needs ahead of the resumption of face-to-face classes.
According to a Ministry of Education press release, the team included permanent secretaries and technical officers from several ministries and government agencies.
The officials inspected classrooms, lecture theatres, washrooms, the library and other sections of the campus to identify areas requiring repairs and improvements.
The ministry said the assessment followed an initiative by President Irfaan Ali to improve the university’s physical infrastructure and learning environment.
It added that the exercise was intended to identify the work needed to ensure the campus could safely and effectively accommodate students and staff for in-person classes. No estimated cost or timeline for the proposed works was disclosed.
Accompanying Parag were Permanent Secretary Shannielle Hoosein-Outar, Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain and Adviser on Tertiary Education Reform Dr Kofi Dalrymple, who is also Dean of UG’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology.
