APNU MP Sherod Duncan yesterday said that he is deeply concerned about the conditions at the newly opened Kwebana Secondary School and its dormitory in Region One, as reported to him by parents.
Duncan in a post on the APNU page said that parents have said that construction work is continuing while students occupy the compound, which remains only partly fenced and lacks an adequate security presence. He said that they have also identified deep, exposed drains and muddy, flood-prone spaces between buildings as serious risks to students.
The concerns raised, he said, extend to the dormitory’s basic services and supervision.
“Parents report interruptions in the water supply, no dedicated drinking-water facilities, inadequate ventilation, no dorm father, and too few staff to supervise and care for more than 100 children. They also say the limited kitchen staff have struggled to provide meals on time, while two students reportedly required medical attention after experiencing stomach pains over the weekend. These reports require an immediate, independent inspection and a public response from the regional and national education authorities”, he declared.
Six contracts valued at approximately $2.017 billion were awarded for the school, he noted.
