PNCR/APNU to work with rest of opposition on ferry tragedy, other matters

The People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) yesterday said that as a matter of principle and in keeping with their responsibility to the people of Guyana, they had taken the decision to work collaboratively with the Joint Opposition Parties on the MV Barima disaster and on other significant issues.

In a statement yesterday, PNCR/APNU said that the loss of so many Guyanese lives in the MV Barima tragedy is a national tragedy that transcends political differences.

“It demands truth, accountability, justice, and meaningful reforms to ensure that such a catastrophe never occurs again. The families of the victims and the people of Guyana deserve nothing less.

“Accordingly, PNCR/APNU believes that where matters affect the national interest, public safety, respect for our constitution, good governance, transparency, accountability, and the welfare of the Guyanese people, the parliamentary opposition has a duty to engage constructively and speak with a united voice whenever possible.

“Our decision to work alongside the Joint Opposition Parties on the MV Barima tragedy reflects our commitment to ensuring that there is a thorough, independent, transparent, and credible examination of the circumstances surrounding this disaster, including the actions and omissions of all those who bear responsibility”, the two groups said.

This approach, they said,  is not confined to the MV Barima tragedy.

“PNCR/APNU remains prepared to collaborate with all democratic forces on issues that advance good governance, protect democratic institutions, defend the rule of law, promote economic justice, safeguard the nation’s resources, and improve the lives of all Guyanese.

“While political parties may differ on ideology and policy, there are moments in the life of a nation when the national interest must prevail over partisan considerations. This is one such moment.

PNCR/APNU therefore reaffirms its commitment to responsible leadership and principled cooperation in pursuit of accountability, justice, and a better future for every citizen of Guyana”, the two groups said.
