Police inspector under close arrest after allegedly shooting man in Buxton fracas

The Guyana Police Force and the Office of Professional Responsibility are investigating an alleged discharge of a loaded firearm with intent following a confrontation between a police inspector and a 48-year-old Buxton man on Friday.

The incident reportedly occurred around 3:15 p.m. along the Buxton Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara, where the 48-year-old man was driving a minibus and encountered a 46-year-old Police Inspector attached to the Tactical Services Unit, who was driving a motorcar.

According to a police statement, an argument developed between the two men and during the confrontation, the inspector allegedly discharged several rounds from his service firearm, resulting in the 48-year-old man sustaining gunshot injuries.

The injured man was taken to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor and admitted with suspected gunshot wounds to his chest and left leg. His condition was listed as serious but stable.

The police inspector subsequently reported the matter to the Police Force and surrendered his service weapon, a 9mm Glock 19 pistol, along with 13 live rounds of ammunition. The firearm and ammunition have been lodged pending examination.

Police said a third motor vehicle that was in the vicinity was also struck during the incident. The third vehicle, along with the vehicles being driven by the two men, was examined as part of the investigation.

Investigators have identified CCTV cameras in the area and are working to obtain footage that could shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Meanwhile, the inspector is currently under close arrest.
