-cite declining local output
The Guyana Poultry Producers Association (GPPA) has asked the government to permit the temporary importation of chicken amid declining local production and increased demand.
The request was made during a meeting on Tuesday between representatives of the association and Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha at his office.
According to a Ministry of Agriculture release, the GPPA told Mustapha that recent market trends showed production levels falling as demand for chicken increased.
The association said temporary imports would help meet demand and stabilise prices during the shortage. It added that imports would no longer be necessary once local production returned to normal.
Mustapha said the request would be carefully considered and that any decision would seek to balance the interests of consumers and poultry producers while safeguarding the sustainability of the local industry.
