The Office of Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed says the public has contributed close to $10 million to a month-long humanitarian relief drive established to assist victims, survivors and families affected by the devastating MV Barima tragedy.

The fundraising initiative, spearheaded by Mohamed has seen support from Guyanese at home and abroad through cash donations and contributions of non-perishable food items.

In an update shared on the Facebook page of leader of the opposition’s sister Hana Khamelia, organisers announced that the campaign is on the verge of reaching the $10 million milestone, expressing gratitude to everyone who has contributed.

“Thank you to every single person who has donated. Your generosity is already making a real difference,” the statement said.

It was also disclosed that Mohamed is currently in Port Kaituma, where goods purchased using part of the donated funds are being distributed as part of the ongoing humanitarian response to those affected by the tragedy.

Organisers said the campaign remains active and they are encouraging members of the public to continue supporting the relief effort, noting that every contribution, regardless of its size, will help provide assistance to victims, survivors and grieving families.

Donations continue to be accepted through MMG in Guyana, while overseas supporters can contribute via GoFundMe and Zelle. Non-perishable food items are also being collected at Mohamed’s Enterprise on Lombard Street, Georgetown.

The month-long initiative was launched in the aftermath of the MV Barima disaster, which claimed dozens of lives and left many families mourning the loss of loved ones while others continue to recover from the traumatic incident. The funds will continue to be used to provide direct support to those impacted.
