School affected by stench from Parika Burial Ground

The Parika Burial Ground

The Regional Health Officer (RHO) for Region Three, Fiaaz Hassan, has confirmed that the region’s Environmental Health Department responded to reports of a foul smell coming from the Parika Burial Ground on Thursday, adding a slab of concrete to conceal an improperly buried body.

A parent of a student at the primary school nearby told Kiskadee Watch that the school had been battling the scent for days. The parent said the concrete slab work was completed on Thursday afternoon, and that the Environmental Health Department had already conducted an assessment of the site. Despite the quick fix, the parent said the problem has been recurring since 2010.

“On many occasions tombs gonna break, smell up, and school would have to cancel for the days,” the parent said.

The parent added that the class group chat was notified that a tomb had been broken since Wednesday, and questioned why the school had not received a formal update by Friday.

“Today is Friday, why has the HM not gotten a word yet from the authorities,” the parent asked.

When contacted, Hassan told Kiskadee Watch that his department had been informed of the disturbance and responded on Thursday, adding a fresh cast to seal the tomb. He thanked Kiskadee Watch for the report and encouraged the public to reach out to his office to flag any future disturbances.
