Three Chinese nationals were allegedly held hostage by five masked men, four of whom were reportedly armed with what appeared to be firearms, during a robbery at a hardware store at Public Road, La Grange, West Bank Demerara, last evening.
Police in a statement said that the suspects entered the premises at about 6:20 p.m. and escaped with approximately $23 million in cash.
They allegedly gained entry by climbing over the southern fence of the property from the direction of the Demerara River. After entering the building, police said the men allegedly held the three Chinese nationals hostage before removing the cash, which had reportedly been kept under a bed.
The suspects subsequently escaped through the southern section of a back fence, and the robbery was reported by a 29-year-old Chinese national.
Police said CCTV footage was reviewed, and several persons were questioned as part of the investigation.
