Guyana’s broadcasting fraternity is mourning the death of veteran broadcaster and communications specialist Dr. Rovin Deodat, whose career spanned more than four decades.
Deodat was a familiar voice to generations of Guyanese listeners, particularly through his long-running educational radio feature “From Word to Word,” a programme dedicated to exploring the origins, meanings and uses of words.
The programme became a defining part of his broadcasting career and remained on the air for decades.
Beyond broadcasting, Deodat made significant contributions to Guyana’s communications sector, holding senior positions including Communication Adviser to the Office of the President and Director of Education, Information and Training at the Environmental Protection Agency.
He also played an important role in the development of community broadcasting, particularly in Guyana’s hinterland. As coordinator of the Government’s Regional Radio Project, Deodat was involved in establishing and developing regional radio stations while training broadcasters to serve their communities.
His academic background included a PhD in Communications, a Master’s degree in English from Simon Fraser University and a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Guyana.
With more than 40 years dedicated to media, communications and education, Deodat leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond the radio microphone.
For many Guyanese, however, it will be his distinctive voice, his love for language and the lessons delivered through “From Word to Word” that remain most memorable.
