Wife of Glasgow fisher stunned by killing allegedly involving close friend

Franklyn Sauers

The wife of slain fisherman Franklyn Sauers says she is struggling to understand how her husband was killed during an incident allegedly involving a close friend with whom he had worked at sea for the past four to five months.

Sauers, called “Franky”, 34, of Glasgow Housing Scheme, East Bank Berbice, was found with stab wounds at a house at Albion Front, Corentyne, at around 10 pm on Sunday.

The woman, who gave her name as Varsha and said she was 30-years-old  said the two men worked together as fishermen and appeared to share a close relationship.

“They are very close friends. That is what shocked me,” she said, explaining that Sauers would regularly transport the man to purchase supplies before they went fishing.

According to her, she spoke to Sauers by telephone shortly before receiving a frantic call from his alleged killer’s wife at the Albion Front house. She was screaming and said the two men were “stabbing” each other and that Sauers had collapsed.

The wife said she could hear shouting and commotion but was unable to communicate properly with those at the house. She immediately travelled to the location.

Upon entering, she recalled seeing a knife on the floor and her husband lying in a pool of blood. She attempted to rouse him while calling on him to wake up.

She said the 28-year-old fisherman who was later arrested was in the kitchen near a refrigerator and did not appear to have suffered any injuries. She questioned him about what had happened but said she received no clear explanation.

The woman said other persons were present at the house, but none had provided her with an account of what led to the fatal encounter.

“I want justice. We all want justice,” she said.

In its statement, the police said Sauers and the suspect were known to each other. Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspect was at his residence when Sauers entered the house and an altercation followed.

Ranks responding to the scene found Sauers lying motionless in the living room with apparent stab wounds to his neck and left rib area.

Sauers was taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His body was subsequently taken to the Ramoo Funeral Home and is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

The suspect was arrested at the scene and remains in custody at the Albion Police Station as investigations continue.
