CWI U19 50-Over Championship: Budhram, Ramdeholl efforts not enough as Guyana lose opener

Joshua Budhram claimed four wickets for just nine runs to help dismiss Trinidad and Tobago for 167.

Standout performances from Joshua Budhram and Romario Ramdeholl were not enough to prevent Guyana from suffering a 24-run defeat to Trinidad and Tobago in the opening round of the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Men’s Under-19 50-Over Championship yesterday.

Budhram claimed four wickets for just nine runs to help dismiss Trinidad and Tobago for 167 at the Liberta Sports Club in Antigua and Barbuda. However, Guyana’s batting struggled in response, despite an unbeaten 41 from vice-captain Ramdeholl, as they were bowled out for 143 in 34.3 overs.

Chasing 168 for victory, Guyana made a poor start after losing both openers with only 10 runs on the board.

Yannick Newton and Shamar Apple attempted to repair the innings with scores of 23 and 28 respectively, but Guyana continued to lose wickets at regular intervals.

Ramdeholl fought to keep the chase alive with a patient 41 not out from 82 deliveries. However, he received little support as Guyana fell short of the target.

Daniel Holder, Amrit Pittiman and Daron Dhanraj claimed three wickets each for Trinidad and Tobago.

Earlier, Guyana captain Parmeshwar Ram won the toss and chose to field. His bowlers responded by dismissing Trinidad and Tobago in 40.5 overs.

Off-spinner Budhram led the attack with outstanding figures of 4-9 from 3.5 overs. Dhanesh Persaud, Ramdeholl and Micah Amsterdam supported him with two wickets each.

Christian Lall held Trinidad and Tobago’s innings together with a composed 53 from 70 balls, including five fours. Tariq Richards made 31, while Christiano Ramanan contributed 33.

Guyana will look to rebound when they face Jamaica in their second group match on July 13.
