KW sports comment: Cliff Anderson Sports Hall still waiting for a finish line

Cliff Anderson Sports Hall

The latest tender issued by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport for additional roof repairs at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall has once again raised a question that has followed the project for several years; when will the renovation actually be completed? The new roof rehabilitation works, estimated at almost $26 million, come after more than $300 million has already been invested in the facility since rehabilitation began in 2022.

The concern is not necessarily that more work is being done. Large public infrastructure projects often require adjustments as issues emerge. The concern is that the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall appears to remain in a constant state of renovation despite repeated announcements about its progress and reopening.

When the refurbished facility reopened in late 2024 and into early 2025, government officials highlighted the significant investment made in modernising the venue. Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Charles Ramson described the facility as a state-of-the-art venue designed to improve the experience for athletes and spectators alike. At the time, more than $300 million had reportedly been spent on upgrades including air-conditioning systems, electrical works, structural improvements and other renovations.

However, several key components of the broader project have remained unfinished or have required further intervention. The roof has now been the subject of additional tenders despite previous works being undertaken. Bucket seating, which was promoted as part of the upgraded facility, has faced delays. Other supporting infrastructure, including parking facilities and various improvements around the venue, have also remained works in progress.

Adding to the discussion is the evolving description of the facility itself. During the reopening period, the venue was promoted as a modern and upgraded sporting facility. Yet subsequent reports have indicated that additional works are necessary to bring the hall fully in line with international standards and requirements for major events. A later inspection ahead of international basketball competition reportedly identified deficiencies relating to the playing surface, lighting and technical areas.

None of this diminishes the importance of investing in sports infrastructure. The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall remains one of Guyana’s most important indoor sporting venues and serves basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, boxing, martial arts and several other disciplines.

Continued investment is necessary if the country is to host regional and international competitions and provide quality facilities for athletes.

What is needed now is clarity. The public has been informed about contracts awarded, sums spent and works completed. What has been less clear is the final vision of the project and the timeline for achieving it. If additional works are required to meet international standards, that should be openly communicated. If the project is being completed in phases, each phase should be clearly outlined with expected completion dates.

The Cliff Anderson Sports Hall renovation has undoubtedly transformed parts of the facility compared to its condition several years ago. Yet after multiple contracts, revised timelines and continuing upgrades, the project increasingly appears to be one without a defined finish line.
