Guyana’s Stafon Roach advanced to the men’s triple-jump final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, while sprinters Jackson Clarke and Keliza Smith ended their 200-metre campaigns at the semi-final stage.
Roach produced a best effort of 15.45 metres during Thursday’s qualifying round to finish 11th overall, securing a place in Saturday’s medal event.
The Guyanese jumper will return to action on Saturday, August 1, when he competes against the leading qualifiers for a place on the podium.
On the track, Clarke finished eighth in his men’s 200m semi-final after stopping the clock at 20.70 seconds. He was unable to secure one of the qualifying positions for the final but completed a creditable campaign after advancing from the opening round.
Smith also bowed out in the women’s 200m semi-finals after placing sixth in the third round. The Guyanese sprinter recorded 23.69 seconds but did not progress to the final.
Roach is now the only one of the three Guyanese athletes still in contention in their respective events and will look to improve on his qualifying mark when the triple-jump final is contested.
