More than 300 children and adults are attending a week-long Learn to Swim programme at the Roger Hinds Swimming Pool in Mahdia, with sessions scheduled to end on Saturday, October 17.

The programme, organised by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission, began on Monday, October 12. It is the first time the initiative has been held in Mahdia.

Head Coach Paul Mahaica said the daily schedule includes five one-hour training sessions. Children and young people aged six to 18 attend during the day, while adults receive instruction in the evenings.

Fifteen certified coaches are conducting the lessons. All are also certified lifeguards and trained in first aid.

Participating students attend Mahdia Primary, Mahdia Secondary, Micobie Primary, Micobie Secondary, Campbelltown Primary and Princeville Primary. Dozens of adults have also enrolled.

The Ministry and the National Sports Commission have provided swimming gear to all participants at no cost.

The Mahdia sessions form part of the Government’s wider Learn to Swim programme, which also operates in Regions Two, Four, Five, Six and Ten. According to the organisers, thousands of children and adults have received swimming instruction through the initiative.
