Gavin and Chucky take Guyanese folk music to Ireland

Musicians Gavin and Chucky perform Guyanese folk songs for visitors at Old Mellifont Abbey in Ireland

Guyanese musicians Gavin and Chucky are taking the country’s folk music and culture to new audiences in Ireland, embarking on a 15-day cross-country tour featuring performances, radio interviews and cultural exchanges with traditional Irish musicians.

The duo is co-headlining the tour with The Berger Boys, a father-and-son musical act from the United States, as part of a tour organised by Ireland Along The Way.

The tour will take Gavin and Chucky to a number of historic and scenic locations across Ireland, including Malahide in County Dublin, Moy Valley Spa and Golf Club, Lough Rynn Castle Estate in Mohill, County Leitrim, County Mayo, the Aran Islands and Ennis in County Clare.

The programme will include performances by the Guyanese duo, appearances on Irish radio and workshops involving traditional Irish musicians, creating opportunities for the exchange of musical traditions between Guyana and Ireland.

Gavin and Chucky are no strangers to the Irish music scene. In January 2025, they showcased their folk/punk fusion, known as “Creole Rock,” at Your Roots Are Showing, a major Irish folk music event.

Their connection with Ireland Along The Way also dates back to Gavin’s earlier visit to Ireland in 2024, when he met the company’s founder, Chris Keenan, at Your Roots Are Showing.

Ireland Along The Way specialises in organising cross-country coach tours in Ireland throughout the year, bringing performers and audiences together at cultural, historic and scenic locations.

The current tour marks another step in Gavin and Chucky’s efforts to promote and preserve Guyanese folk music. The musicians have described the opportunity as a “dream come true,” coming after a decade of work dedicated to keeping Guyanese folk traditions alive and introducing them to contemporary audiences.

Their international work follows the release of “Jungle Punk,” a live album recorded at the University of Surrey during their 2025 tour. The album, which captures their live performance, is now available on major streaming platforms.

The Ireland tour is expected to provide further exposure for Guyanese folk music while giving the musicians an opportunity to engage directly with Irish traditional musicians and audiences.

Following their return to Guyana at the end of September, Gavin and Chucky are scheduled to perform at the Rupununi Music and Arts Festival, set for October 16-18 at Manari Ranch.

The duo’s Ireland tour has received support from the Guyana Tourism Authority, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Happy Home Guyana Inc.
