President Irfaan Ali last week met a US congressional delegation led by Representative Gregory Meeks on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, with Guyana’s border controversy with Venezuela among the matters discussed.
In an account of the meeting posted on his Facebook page, Ali said the talks addressed Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity in light of the anticipated ruling by the International Court of Justice. They also covered efforts to diversify the economy beyond oil and gas and developments concerning the Global Biodiversity Alliance.
The US delegation included Representatives Pramila Jayapal and Jonathan Jackson. According to Ali, the lawmakers reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties with Guyana through the House Foreign Affairs Committee and other congressional committees and caucuses, including the Congressional Black Caucus.
Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh, Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett and Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud accompanied Ali.
