Robin Persaud produced one of the standout performances of Sunday’s Victor Macedo Memorial Cycle Road Race, winning the Masters 35-and-over category and placing third overall in the Open contest.
However, it was Aaron Newton who secured the main prize, crossing the line ahead of defending champion Jamaul John to win the Open race. Persaud followed in third, while Paul DeNobrega and Alex Mendes occupied fourth and fifth respectively.
Persaud topped the Masters 35-and-over standings ahead of Mendes, who also earned two top-five results on the day. Kwame Fortune placed third in the Masters division.
Alexander Leung was the lone winner in the Junior category, while Mark Spencer captured the Masters 50-and-over title. Spencer was followed by Ian Jackson and Ray Harlequin.
Leon Koulen led the Category Four competitors, beating Jamal Chappel into second place. Collis Williams completed the podium.
Organised by the Flying Stars Cycling Club, the race rolled away from Macedo’s residence on Peter Rose Street, Queenstown, on a bright Sunday morning. The Elite, Masters 35-and-over and Junior competitors formed the first group, which left at approximately 07:18h, before the second group began its journey.
The riders moved through Lance Gibbs Street and Irving Street before passing the Kitty Roundabout and entering Clive Lloyd Drive, where racing officially commenced.
From there, the longer-distance competitors travelled east to Belladrum via the Mahaicony New Road. The second group turned at Perseverance, also known as “The Big Tree”. Riders returning from the longer course used the Mahaicony Old Road and Drill Public Road before reconnecting with the East Coast Public Road. Both groups finished at Liliendaal, opposite the Liliendaal Hospital.
