The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) yesterday shut down a shop at Tamakay Landing in the Mazaruni Mining District after finding that it was trading gold without the required licences and approvals.
The GGMC Enforcement Team, during an inspection on September 28, seized a quantity of gold, equipment and cash from the operation, according to the Ministry of Natural Resources.
Two people were also detained by police as investigations into the operation continue.
The ministry said the enforcement action forms part of its ongoing crackdown on illegal mining and related activities across Guyana’s mining districts.
It has urged miners and other stakeholders in the sector to ensure that their operations comply with the country’s laws and licensing requirements.
The GGMC’s enforcement teams are continuing monitoring and enforcement operations in mining areas.
