Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar has warned telecommunications operators to maintain their networks and remove overgrown vegetation before it threatens the electricity system and public safety.
The warning came during a meeting yesterday with Digicel Guyana Chief Executive Officer Deonarine Gopaul and Operations Manager Cyril Francis, according to a ministry release.
Indar raised concerns about vines and other vegetation affecting utility and transmission lines. Digicel representatives indicated that the company’s maintenance team would patrol its network to identify and address affected areas, the release said.
The ministry did not identify the locations where the problems had been observed, give a deadline for corrective work or say whether any penalties could be imposed for non-compliance.
The meeting also addressed Digicel’s telecommunications operations, ongoing works and coordination surrounding utility infrastructure.
According to the ministry, the engagement formed part of a series of meetings between Indar and telecommunications companies about vegetation affecting utility infrastructure.
Indar was accompanied by Director General Alfonso De Armas and Permanent Secretary Vishal Ambedkar.
