Two women who were asleep in their homes were alerted to an approaching fire by a passer-by, whose intervention the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) credited with saving lives and property.
In a Facebook post shared by the GFS, Andy Persaud said he was returning home from Skeldon when he noticed black smoke about one street away from his residence and went to investigate.
Persaud said he discovered that the fire was threatening the home of his friend, Joaney Charran, who was asleep after working a long day.
He shouted to awaken her and she left the house, unaware that a fire was approaching the property. Persaud said Charran’s neighbour, Anjane Lall, was also asleep.
Persaud then contacted the Corriverton Fire Station and said firefighters arrived within approximately ten minutes.
“A big thank you officers, you guys did an excellent job,” he wrote, while expressing relief that both women were safe.
The circumstances surrounding the fire, including where it started and the extent of any damage, were not disclosed in either post.
The Fire Service thanked Persaud, saying his “act of kindness saved both life and property,” and urged citizens to remain alert.
The GFS also reminded the public to call 912 in the event of a fire or other emergency.
